Ways to serve

Every H&I panel needs speakers, a leader each week, and a chair to keep it all running. Here's what each role involves.

Panel speaker

Shares experience, strength, and hope with people in hospitals and institutions.

  • Shares their personal recovery story
  • Inspires others through their journey
  • Offers hope to those still struggling
  • Connects people with the wider recovery community

How much sober time a speaker needs is up to the panel leader.

Panel leader

Runs the meeting at a facility on their assigned week.

  • Facilitates the panel discussion
  • Keeps the meeting running smoothly and on time
  • Creates a safe, welcoming room
  • Attends the H&I business meeting at least quarterly to stay current and find speakers

Panel leaders usually have significant time in recovery and some leadership experience.

Panel chair

Handles the logistics behind a facility's panels.

  • Coordinates with the facility and with speakers
  • Manages the panel schedule and leader assignments
  • Keeps everyone involved in the loop
  • Looks after the quality and consistency of the panel

Panel chairs are usually experienced members who understand both recovery and the committee's needs.
